Outline of Annual Research Achievements

This project attempts to test the effectiveness and applicability of a rapid statistical analysis in different volcanic settings to predict the likelihood of large hazards and disclose the dominant factors controlling the turbidite distributions. In this fiscal year, we have finished most of the data extractions, processes and analyses. We are now finalizing the last statistical analysis, which is in charge by one of the collaborators, and working on manuscript writing. Our study suggests that the effects of volcanism and sedimentary processes across time and space on the sediment records can be revealed by integrating the thickness-frequency of event beds and hypothesis tests. Besides, we have initiated three several additional projects focusing on paleoseismology history in the Kuril Trench by collaborating with our colleagues in Japan.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

The dataset collected from IODP legacy reports is sufficient for exploring the research questions that we aimed to resolve. The statistical analysis and results are further improved by collaborating with a PhD student with a mathematic background at GEOMAR (a reputable marine institution in Germany). Although the statistical analyses have not been entirely finalized, 80% of the research outcomes have been compiled into a manuscript draft, which is ahead of the research schedule.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

We plan to submit the manuscript of this JSPS project to an SCI journal in fiscal year 2025, if the collaborator in German smoothly finalize his part of analysis. In the meantime, I will keep working on unfinished core analyses at the Kochi Core Center and attend at least two research cruises to collect the necessary data for the additional projects starting in fiscal year 2024.

Causes of Carryover

Due to the available time of the machines, a scheduled trip to the Kochi Core Center has been rearranged for the next fiscal year.
