Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Over the past 6 months, I have undertaken a variety of research and dissemination work in support of my project. I have had one article published in this time and have presented at a number of conferences and seminars in Japan and the UK with leading organisations and scholars within Iranian Studies and Early Modern History. I have been able to undertake significant further research on collections in the UK at the British Library and National Archives, with museum visits to the collections at the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum. These activities have helped to increase my scholarly networks and to identify further areas of research to further my project over the coming 18 months. I have begun writing on the first of my two planned articles, which I intend to complete following a further research trip to Qatar, the Netherlands and France to consult relevant archives and collections there.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The publication of a recent book by Rudi Matthee just before the beginning of this fellowship has caused a change in the direction of my research. While the specifics of the project are still strong, the broader implications of the work have been reduced. I have found a great deal of data for further research and enquiry which has meant that my research can still continue in much more creative ways.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In May/June 2024, I will travel to Doha’s Museum of Islamic Art to examine their collection of Persian glass and ceramics, which includes a number of wine bottles and bowls. I will attend a conference at the West Caspian University in Baku to present my early research findings on this project. Following this, I will visit museum and archival collections in Istanbul, Amsterdam, the Hague and Aix-en-Provence, before travelling to the UK to present at the 2024 Britain and the World Conference in Winchester and participate in the UCL workshop entitled ‘South Asia’ + ‘Middle East’ + ‘Early Modern’ = ?
