Outline of Annual Research Achievements

月レゴリス粒子について、アポロ11,16号サンプルに加えて、新たに旧ソ連のルナ16, 20, 24号のサンプルについて放射光マイクロX線CT撮影をおこない、これらの3次元外形を求めた。また、従来の実験に加えて、様々な条件において隕石模擬物質をターゲットとした高速衝突実験を新たにおこない、回収した破片粒子の3次元外形をもとめた。これらの粒子形状(3軸比)分布を、これまでに測定したイトカワのレゴリス粒子(はやぶさサンプル)と比較することにより以下の結論を得た。(1)衝突実験粒子の3次元形状は従来考えられていたよりも実験条件の違いにより多様性をもつ。(2)イトカワ粒子の3次元形状は衝突エネルギー密度の小さなクレータ生成実験のものと類似する。(3)月粒子はイトカワ粒子や衝突実験粒子に比べて有意に球状を示し、ガーデニングによる破砕と摩耗の影響を大きく受けている。
イトカワ粒子表面の微細構造について、FE-SEMだけでなくTEM観察をおこなった。これにより、太陽風照射により生成した宇宙風化リム中のブリスター構造が、FE-SEMにより表面で観察できることを示し、その分布から粒子の運動を論じた。また、粒子表面のナノクレータおよび微細溶融物がイトカワ表面での微小隕石の衝突によってできたことを示した。太陽風照射を模擬したイオン照射実験を引き続きおこない、はやぶさ粒子に見られる宇宙風化リム類似の組織が小さい照射フラックスで生成されることをはじめて示した。
これまでのサンプル分析と実験結果を総合することにより、イトカワ表面でのレゴリスの生成と進化のモデルを、実証的に描くことができた。とくに、短いタイムスケール(~10^4年)での太陽風照射による宇宙風化リム生成と比較的長いタイムスケールでの粒子の機械的摩耗が競合的におこることにより、観測される宇宙風化が進むことを示した。
