Research Abstract

Research Results for FY2013: In line with the project's plan, research activities in FY2013 focused on two areas:
1)A further development of the data in a coherent input-output framework that ensures the proper cost weighting of all inputs. Tasks included: <a>Integrated the time series national accounts with the benchmark input-output tables, and reconstructing time series of input-output tables. <b>extended the IO and NA time series to an earlier period in 1981 that could better capture the effect of the early reforms. <c>constructed producer price index for each industry and sector of the entire economy for double deflation exercise
2)An analysis of industry-level productivity performance with different degree of government intervention to explore the role of the state in the Chinese economy. Tasks included: <a>Constructed industry groups to capture the influence of the government in resource allocation by conjecturing how interventions are made to groups of industries located on the different positions of the production chain. <b> Tested the conjecture by the Jorgenson-Griliches type of growth accounting approach for TFP performances across groups which arrived at very satisfactory results. <c>Two conference presentations were delivered based on the results.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

Well followed the plan especially as the adjustment in 2012FY to ensure the constructed data are good enough for the project’s analytical purpose.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

1. Working on a book on the Chinese industrial growth and productivity since 1980 using the established data.
2. Publishing 3-4 background papers for the constructed data and at least two analytical papers using the data.
3. Extending the data set, especially factor costs, to a new benchmark given by Chinese 2012 input-output table (will be available in 2014-2015).
4. Consolidating the indicators (e.g. the share of the state employment by industry) that can be used to examine the role of the state firms and hence the role of the government.

Expenditure Plans for the Next FY Research Funding
