Outline of Annual Research Achievements

最終年度にあたり、旧食虫類の各系統を用い、まず頭蓋諸骨の系統性と機能性を理論化した。歯列形態や咀嚼筋形状を三次元的な検討対象として、系統性の判別を考慮しつつ、摂食機能を精査、さらに摂食装置と神経頭蓋とのスペースの奪い合いについて検討した。該当の進化事象は、発生学的な拘束とその改変から理論づけられることを確信するに至っている。中枢神経と感覚器装着部位の大型化が旧食虫類共通の特徴であることを重視し、発生時の骨化パターンのデータを比較論議に加えることで、哺乳類の原始性・旧食虫類の普遍性を示唆する形質を抽出できたといえる。前頭骨、頭頂骨、外後頭骨、底後頭骨に対する相対的な上後頭骨の早期出現と大型化が、旧食虫類の基本的頭蓋構造を特徴づけていることを考慮しつつ、それら諸骨が作る空間の機能性を吟味できた。他方、マイクロCTの聴覚装置への適用により、中耳形態を完全に三次元化し、多種間での比較が可能となった。その上で、生活史とその三次元形態形質との間の関係を検討し、多系統的に出現する生態学的特徴に合わせて、中耳の三次元形態が収斂することが証明された。総合比較として、テンレック類やツパイ類、周辺の系統では翼手類や皮翼類、齧歯類、食肉類や鯨偶蹄類、さらには外群としてより下等な脊椎動物を導入し、集積される旧食虫類のデータに対して、収斂形質の機能比較を幅広く行った。そして、表現型が内包する真の機能的意義を解明、収斂の実態に迫りながら対象の特性に合ったデータ化を遂行した。
