Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study is a translational research aimed at clinical application of hydrogen inhalation therapy (HIT) in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (CA) patient. First, we verified the usefulness of hydrogen inhalation using a rat CA model. Brain function scores and survival rates in the HIT group were improved compared to the control group. It showed the most improvement effect by the combined use of HIT and therapeutic hypothermia. In addition, we evaluated the safety and efficacy of HIT for patients successfully resuscitated after CA. There were no side effects and clinical disadvantages. Four patients of all 5 eligible patients discharged from hospital with alert consciousness. We are planning to verify the efficacy of HIT for post-CA patients by multicenter randomized trial.
