| Research Abstract |
本研究において,モンゴルおよび周辺地帯のジュラ紀～白亜紀の地層から,被子植物初期進化群の3次元構造が残っている植物化石を見つけ出し,地球が温暖化していたジュラ紀～白亜紀の地球環境の中で出現した被子植物の起源群と初期進化を解明することを目的としている。
今年度の調査には、アメリカからLeslie Andrew (Yale Univ.)とPatrick Herendeen(シカゴ植物園)がモンゴルの現地調査のメンバーとなり、モンゴル側スタッフとモンゴル東南部のゴビ砂漠を中心に野外調査を行った。
今回のモンゴル調査では、前期白亜紀のTugrugとShivee-Ovoo、Shine Khudakおよびジュラ紀の
Khootin Khonkhorの野外調査を行った。Tugrugでは、炭化植物化石の研究に適している地層を発見した。この中には、多くの炭化物やリグナイトが含まれており、現在、試料の処理を進めている。Shivee-Ovooでは、炭化化石が含まれている可能性のある地層と多様な印象化石を発見した。ジュラ紀のKhootin Khonkhorでは、地層の状態を確認し、今後の研究の可能性を探った。沢田は、これらの炭化化石のバイオマーカーの研究を行い、化石化の初期過程を解明した。久田は、アジア地域全体の炭化植物化石の研究の可能性を探っている。
これまでに発見された炭化化石は、モンゴルの白亜紀の地層から、初めて発見されたものであり、いずれも3次元的構造を残しており、被子植物の初期進化と地球環境の変遷解明に有効な手掛かりを得ている。その3次元構造解析をアメリカの大型放射光施設APSによる、マイクロCT撮影を進めており、3Dレンダリングによる3次元的構造解析を行っている。その結果、現在、Yale大学と共同で、これまでの研究成果をとりまとめ中であり、さらにNSFのプロジェクトを立ち上げるために準備している。

当初の目的のために、引き続き、モンゴルでの白亜紀の野外調査を遂行する。さらに、白亜紀の地球温暖化と深い関わりのあるアラスカなどの地域での野外調査を展開する方向を探っていく。

モンゴルの中で、研究対象をTevshinn GoviとTugrugに絞り、両地域でかなり時間をかけて、集中的に調査を行う。
