Outline of Final Research Achievements |
We assigned non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients receiving concomitant chemo-radiotherapy (CCRT) to either electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) group (EG) or control group (CG). The quadriceps muscle of both legs were stimulated using EMS, every day through the whole CCRT period. For EG, patients were allowed to raise the electrical current but for CG patient, electrical current has to be kept at the level where no muscle contraction was visible or palpable. Quadriceps muscle thickness (QT), circumference of the thigh (CT) were measured before start and after completion of whole CCRT. Weekly blood sampling was performed. Out of the eligible patients, 27 agreed to participate (EG, 20; CG, 7). In CG all patients’ QT and CT size reduced during CCRT but in EG there were some patients where the size even increased. This difference was statistically significant. Statically significantly fewer serum albumin loss was observed in EG.
