| Research Abstract |
An article titled “Abandoning Our Selves to Laughter: Time and the Question of Self-Loss in Laughter” was published in the peer reviewed journal Israeli Journal of Humor Studies in June, 2013 and useful feedback was received from readers.
I also critically reviewed a paper referring to my own work submitted for publication in the Israeli Journal of Humor Studies. I have functioned in the position of Contributing Editor for that journal and have been invited to edit a special issue of the journal on laughter, humor and time sometime in the next two years.
I presented a paper titled “Andy Warhol and Comic Nomadic Counterculture” at the 25th Annual Conference of the International Society for Humor Studies in Williamsburg, USA from July 2 to 6, 2013. This paper applied Deleuzian philosophy of time to elucidate the centrality of laughter and the comic dimension in the work of the artist Andy Warhol and prompted numerous inquiries about the theoretical approach. A paper titled “James’s ‘A Bundle of Letters’: Epistolary Prose, Epistemological Problems” was delivered to the symposium on the literature of Hardy and James in October 2013.
My proposal for a presentation titled “Towards Nomadic Thinking on Laughter’s Time Machinery” for the International Deleuze Studies conference in Instanbul in July 2014 has been accepted. A proposal for a presentation titled “Laughter as a Time Machine: a Nomadic Investigation” for the Annual Meeting of the Society for Phenomenological and Existential Philosophy in New Orleans in October 2014 has been accepted.

Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
Overall, a satisfactory amount of progress has been made so far. A considerable amount of research reading has been done, around 80% of that required. Extra research reading has needed to be undertaken as the phenomenological work of Husserl has proven insufficient as a basis of the study of laughter as a temporal phenomenon. Consequently, the research and theoretical modelling process has shifted towards a post-phenomenological approach, focused more on the work of Deleuze and recent theorists of time, as well as drawing on the earlier work on time by Bergson which influenced Husserl, Merleau-Ponty and Deleuze.

| Strategy for Future Research Activity |
The aim in the coming year is to test and further refine a theoretical model of comic laughter based on subjective time while broadening the cross-cultural base through dissemination of the results of the research so far by presenting on the content and implications of my research so far and receiving feedback from international scholars of philosophy specializing in Deleuzian, phenomenological and existential approaches. My proposals to two international philosophy conferences have been accepted for the coming year. I will give a paper titled “Towards Nomadic Thinking on Laughter’s Time Machinery” at the International Deleuze Studies conference in Instanbul in July. Here I will present a tentative proposal for the use of Deleuzian and Bergsonian notions of time in laughter theory, and will discuss the importance of recognizing substantial differences in both intuitive and conceptual responses to laughter. I hope to gain valuable feedback and suggestions for further advancement of the research from specialist Deleuze scholars.
As previously planned, I will deliver a presentation titled “Laughter as a Time Machine: a Nomadic Investigation,” to the Annual Meeting of the Society for Phenomenological and Existential Philosophy in New Orleans in October. Again, I hope to receive valuable critique and advice from philosophers through this presentation. I plan to revise my presentation manuscript based on this presentation and feedback for consideration for publication in the special SPEP volume of the Journal of Speculative Philosophy devoted to conference papers.

| Expenditure Plans for the Next FY Research Funding |
In order to disseminate results and tentative conclusions from my research to date and I need to give papers at two international philosophy conferences and my proposed presentations for those conferences have been confirmed.
The total expenditure for the coming year will be approximately 570,000円, all of it being spent on travel. The projected cost of attending the 12th International Deleuze conference in Instanbul on July 14-16, 2014 will be around 290,000円 including flight ticket, accommodation and living allowance. The projected cost of attending the 53rd Annual Meeting of the Society for Phenomenological and Existential Philosophy in New Orleans on October 23-25, 2014 will be around 280,000円 including flight ticket, accommodation and living allowance.
