Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study treats with language theories in eighteenth-century France and puts stress on the philosophical context of these theories, especially about Jean-Jacques Rousseau. While many of the contemporary thinkers considered gestures and animal screams as the origin of language, Rousseau argued that human voice is the expression of moral sentiment and is the origin of language and music. And while contemporary thinkers aimed at enlightening people by improving scientific language, Rousseau pursuit language likely to communicate moral sentiment.
