Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The purpose of this research was to highlight how cultural bias can influence communication in cross-cultural contexts. Specifically, the original goal was to investigate a business context by collecting data from private companies. However, this plan was modified as it proved difficult to obtain company data due to privacy concerns. Nevertheless, data was obtained from business and educational settings that was compared. Results showed a distinct difference in how participants from Japan and the US interpret important concepts such as democracy. Participants from high context cultures, such as Japan. Valued a more collective socialist approach towards democracy while a low context country, the US, valued individualistic oriented freedoms. This difference contributes to differences in communication, problem solving and decision making. Not all of the data was fully analyzed and written up because of the time required, so this research will continue to bear results in the future. Finally, this research grant spurred the author towards new areas of interest and has resulted in two papers and six international conference presentations so far.
