Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This research was aimed at finding and clarifying some ways in which tablet computing devices (in the case of this project, iPads exclusively) could be used in language education in Japanese universities and similar institutions. The two researchers approached this question through a number of lenses. As teachers of English classes, we were excited by the possibilities of using iPads and other tablets in our own classes. Working in a humanities faculty with generally limited funding and a lack of institutional interest in learning technologies, we wanted to see how easy on a practical level and how pedagogically valuable using tablets would be. As researchers, we were interested in viewing the uses of tablets from the point of view of computer-assisted language learning and mobile learning. We used a range of software (apps) in a range of classes and in a range of activities. In doing so, we found a multitude of uses for tablet devices. These uses can largely be divided into: (a) Substitution; (b) Augmentation; (c) Modification; and (d) Redefinition, following Puentedura's classification. In general, we consider that new users need to be presented with a menu of activities falling into all four categories, and we describe some of these in an e-book to be released shortly.
