Outline of Final Research Achievements

Japanese science and engineering students feel a strong instrumental motivation for English for their future careers, but have little sense of an English-speaking self due to a near lack of English in the classroom. In other words, regardless of standardized exam scores, both questionnaire and interview results revealed that Japanese science and engineering students have little or no exposure to actual English usage during their science classes. This lack of experience in the classroom leads them to have a very low motivation for English learning.
