Outline of Final Research Achievements

By using geological and archaeological materials, we searched some parts of formation processes of early rice cultivation in East Asia, covering the areas from the Lower Yangtze Area to Jiangsu Basin. In particular, as a result of the DEM analysis of geomorphic environment, we revealed that there is a huge wetland in the area from Jiangsu Basin to Taihu-lake Basin. Because its formation was based on the formation of coastal sand dune along the East China Sea, we can call it “Huge Back Marsh Area”. And as a results of the comparison made with outcomes of the analysis of farming and fishing tools, we can argue as follows: it was possible that the transformation of geomorphic environment had an influence on the transformation from primary rice cultivation in broad spectrum economy to rice cultivation with paddy field. We then concluded that there were diverse processes of “Early Rice Cultivation” in all Lower Yangtze area.
