Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The purpose of this study is, from a viewpoint of banking history, to compare the origin and development of the U.S. investment banking internationally and to study on the nowadays significance of its existence: (1) the business model of merchants and financiers who played a significant role in the international trade in the Amsterdam market of the 17th century and the origins of the bill acceptance credit business were revealed; (2)by doing research on the activities of the merchant banks in the 19th century London, we showed that the historical heritage embodied in merchant banks would make them derive profits from commercial transactions and that their impediment of business deployment lay in the size of capital; (3) as for the investment banks of the 20th century United States of America, we confirmed that these banks could be regarded as a desecendent of the merchant banks.
