Outline of Final Research Achievements

Abscisic acid (ABA) is a phytohormone that responds to environmental stresses such as water deficiency. ABA inter-tissue transport mechanisms have not completely been figured out yet. This time, I detected the expression of genes encoding ABA biosynthetic enzymes and ABA transporters mainly in vascular cells. Additionally, I observed that enhancement of ABA biosynthesis in vascular cells induced guard-cell responses, even under normal growth conditions. These results demonstrate that ABA is synthesized in vascular cells and can be transported to target cells in different tissues.
