Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Caldicellulosiruptor bescii (C. bescii) is the most thermophilic bacterium that can degrade crystalline cellulose. Experiments using microcrystalline cellulose and native timothy grass showed that the cellulose system of C. bescii decomposes them more than double as compared to the most common enzyme system prepared from Trichoderma species. A new protein family, PWBP (plant cell wall-binding protein), was identified in the C. bescii cellulose system. The recombinant PWBP49, PWBP57, and PWBP65, prepared from E. coli, showed the highest binding affinities to native plant cell walls among insoluble polysaccharides tested.
