Outline of Final Research Achievements

The aim of this study is to prepare a highly ordered photocatalyst possessing a unique nano-porous structure in which a novel reaction would proceed under irradiation condition but not proceed under ordinary thermal condition. A highly ordered nano-porous photocatalyst (m-Ta2O5) has been prepared and applied to a one-pot synthesis of lactic acid via a radical CO2 fixation with ethanol. However, since m-Ta2O5 had a hydrophilic surface, the hydrophobic CO2 molecule hardly adsorbed to nano-pores of m-Ta2O5, resulting in the inefficient reactivity for the synthesis of lactic acid. In order to solve this problem, hydrophobic modification was adopted into a mesoporous silica (m-SiO2) using a fluorine-containing silylation agent and then titanium dioxide nanoparticles were loaded on the modified m-SiO2, namely TiO2/m-F-SiO2 was prepared. It has been proved that TiO2/m-F-SiO2 has a great ability to produce OH radical species in aqueous solution under UV irradiation.
