Outline of Final Research Achievements |
To better understand how H5N1 influenza viruses could become to replicate and transmit efficiently among humans, we analyzed mutations occurred in H5N1 viruses through the adaptation to normal human bronchial epithelial (NHBE) cells. We found some HA mutations responsible for the efficient replication in NHBE cells affected thermal stability, fusion activity and cytotoxicity, suggesting such mutations might confer the phenotype of seasonal human viruses to avian H5N1 viruses.
