Outline of Final Research Achievements

Japanese community-dwelling older people (1316 men, 1318 women) without depression and cognitive decline, aged more than 65 years old, were followed up for 5 years. In baseline examination (2007-2008), the prevalence of subjective memory impairment (SCI) was 73.9%. Five years later, 45.8% had still suffered from SCI, 28.4% had improved normally, and 7.8% had been aware of SCI. Of cognitively normal people in the baseline, 9.5% had declined to MCI and 4.5% to dementia (MMSE < 24).SCI and metabolic syndrome did not affect cognitive decline during 5 year follow-up interval. To protect cognitive decline might live independently under less social support.
