Outline of Final Research Achievements

Photoacoustic imaging (PAI) enables one to visualize the distribution of hemoglobin and acquire a map of microvessels without using contrast agents. We developed an imaging system equipped with a conventional linear PAI probe and a transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) type of PAI probe and examined whether PAI helps visualize periprostatic microvessels and improves visualization of the neurovascular bundle (NVB) during radical prostatectomy (RP). The images of periprostatic tissues from RP specimens showed substantial signals especially strong on the posterolateral surface of the prostate. Periprostatic tissues monitored intraoperatively also showed strong signals on the posterolateral surface of the prostate and clearly demonstrated the location and extent of the NVB better than does TRUS alone, suggesting that PAI could be an imaging modality useful in nerve-sparing RP.
