Outline of Final Research Achievements

We assessed the incidence, outcome, and characteristics of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) at schools in Osaka. A total of 34 non-traumatic SCA cases were observed during 5 years from 2005 and 11 cases (33%) survived without neurological abnormalities. Ventricular fibrillation or pulseless ventricular tachycardia accounted for 68% (23 of 34 cases). This finding suggests that early defibrillation by automated external defibrillators (AED) placed in schools could improve patient outcomes after SCA.
We also conducted a questionnaire survey regarding the current situation of preparedness and medical emergency response plan (MERP) for SCA in schools. A total of 764 of 1728 schools (44%) responded to the survey. Sixty-four percent schools have established MERP for SCA, and 95% schools have provided cardiopulmonary resuscitation training to school staff in the previous three years. However, nearly half of schools (49%) have not conducted a rehearsal training for the worst-scenario based on MERP.
