Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The gene systems of com and blp regulate DNA recombination induced by competence-stimulating peptide (CSP) and bacteriocin production signaled by bacteriocin-inducing peptide (BIP), respectively. To know the mechanisms of horizontal gene transfer and natural recombination in Streptococcus intermedius, efficiency of transformation, efficacies of bacteriocin production and of biofilm formation were investigated using the gene deletion mutants. The experimental results suggested that the systems of com and blp regulated negatively with each other. Statistical analysis showed that bacteriocin production on the plate cultured bacteria and extracellular DNA amount in the biofilm culture significantly correlated. Therefore, bacteriocin might positively affect to horizontal gene transfer by its bactericidal effect to the genetically related bacteria, while its production was suppressed by the competence-related gene regulation system.
