Outline of Final Research Achievements |
In the present study, we investigated whether injury-induced neural stem/progenitor cells (iNSPCs) that are induced following ischemic stroke have the multipotency to differentiate into vascular cells as well as neural cells. We found that iNSPCs acquire multipotential stem cell activity following ischemic stroke and differentiate into both neural and vascular cells under certain conditions. These findings strongly suggest that neurogenesis and vasculogenesis can occur simultaneously. In addition, this indicates that iNSPCs play an important role in neurovasculogenesis under brain injuries, such as ischemic stroke.
