Outline of Final Research Achievements

We developed a new cryopreservation method where living organisms to be frozen are suspended in silicon oil. When processed in suspension in this manner, living organisms in a 100-micrometer-order size, for example, were found to be maintained in a supercooled state down to nearly -20°C. Furthermore, this suspended processing followed by slow freezing tended to increase the survival rate compared to the processing without slow freezing. Besides, as a new cryopreservation method, we also developed a device for freezing living organisms as solid particles in an approximate minimum size of 100 micrometer.
