Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This research aims to explore the Victorian medical discourse, especially nursing activities, in the plot developments of the Victorian literature from historical and cultural perspectives. The focus is mainly on the notable Victorian writers like Charles Dickens and Elizabeth Gaskell, whose novels deal with the nursing scenes as the main turning point of their plots. Nursing scenes also have a strong influence on the characterization of the protagonists of their novels. Moreover, this study attempts to clarify the influence of Victorian gender ideology on the late Victorian and early 20th century novelists like Olive Schreiner and Virginia Woolf, who treat Victorian nursing discourse as one of the important scenes in their works.
