Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study has shown that the string "used to be" becomes more functional and grammatical. More specifically, in some colloquial American English, "used to be" is becoming established as a construction in the sentence-initial position and implies that the situation that had held for a past interval of time no longer obtains. Moreover, I argued that "used to be" developed from the form [it used to be that-clause].
