Outline of Final Research Achievements |
In the early 1990s Tonga achieved a great success in exporting squash pumpkin to Japan. However, the industry crashed in the late 2000s and Tonga faces economic difficulties. Increasing global food sourcing by multinational firms brings great chances for the developing countries to become the supplying regions of the particular agricultural products. However, in order to keep its position as the key suppliers the region needs a “regional system” which coordinates various rural actors such as farmers, exporters, banks and governments to improve its productivity and quality of the crop. This study explains the rise and fall of Tongan squash industry by focusing on the dynamics of the regional system from the beginning to the end of the industry.
