気体分子と相互作用するナノギャップ電極の原子スケール動的解析

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

本研究の目的「ナノギャップを気体雰囲気下で、その両端に電圧を印加した状態でその場原子スケール観察と電気測定を行う。気体種、気体分圧、ギャップ間隔および印可電圧を系統的に変化させたときのナノギャップ電極の表面の原子配列を決定して、気体雰囲気下のナノギャップの学理の構築を目指す。」に沿って昨年度までに気体雰囲気中で動作中の金ナノギャップ電極表面における新現象を見出した。
本年度は、この新現象の誘起条件を確定するために系統的なETEM観察・電気測定を行ない、各雰囲気(酸素、窒素、水素および参照のための真空)において、金ナノギャップ電極間への印加電圧、金ナノギャップ間に流れる電流と金ナノギャップ電極(正極および負極)表面の構造(形態、金原子の静的な配列、表面金原子の高速移動)を計測・観察してまとめた。気体中ではギャップ間隔がサブナノメーターになるとギャップ間には、真空中のトンネル電流よりも微小な電流が流れる。印加電圧と共に、この電流は増加して、気体中、特に酸素中では、正極表面上の金原子が激しく運動して次第に正極は突起状となり、さらに特定のギャップ間隔、印加電圧、ギャップ間電流では、正負極間にはナノスケールオーダーの幅と長さをもつ架橋が形成される。真空中では表面の金原子がわずかに変位するだけで原子配列には大きな変化はなことも確認した。
この新現象はETEM観察中の電子線照射によってほぼ影響を受けないことを確認した。すなわち電子線を照射せずに酸素中でギャップ間に電圧を印加した場合にも架橋が形成した。またETEM観察中に電子線の電流密度を系統に変化させても金ナノギャップ電極間に流れる電流値に大きな変化が生じなかった。
以上の実験結果を基にして動作中におけるナノギャップ電極表面の原子とギャップ内の気体分子との相互作用について考察した。
