Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In the third year of the project, continued working on the topics started in the first two years. Following up on the theory of the coupled magnon and phonon transport in perpendicular magnetic structures, we now addressed the lateral magnetization dynamics in magnetic films. The high light of last year theory of fs laser excited spatiotemporal pump and probe spectroscopy that allowed direct observation of the magnon-polaron, the new quasi-particle formed by strongly coupled magnon and phonon excitations that was published in Phys. Rev. Lett.. We could explain the experiments of the Tokura Group (RIKEN) group quantitatively. Other activities concerned the theory of spin hydrodynamic generation as observed by the Saitoh Group (Tohoku), the magnetization dynamics of natural and artificial antiferromagnets, atomistic spin simulations of gadolinium iron garnet, and electric field induced spin-orbit torques.

1: Research has progressed more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The field of spin mechanics has gained much momentum by new experiments in Japan and elsewhere. The conference series started by us has been continued last year in Munich, and "Spin Mechanics 4" will be held in Canada next year.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
The coupling of spin and mechanical angular momentum are addressed by the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG) equation coupled to continuum mechanics to describe (i) the coupled lattice magnetization dynamics of magnetic nanoparticles, (ii) laser-induced spatiotemporal magnet ization dynamics as affected by the magnetoelastic coupling, (iii) Boltzmann-level transport equations for heat and spin currents taking disorder and magnon-phonon interactions, (iv) microscopically motivated atomistic spin simulations (v) liquid metal flow actuated by spin injection as well as the spin current generation by the flow of liquid metal, and (vi) spin-orbit interaction and (topological) magnetization textures.
