Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
We continued working on the topics in the past years. We published the work announced in the last report on the discovery of the magnon-polaron, i.e. a strongly hybridized excitation of the lattice and the magnetic order, in yttrium iron garnet (YIG) by the spin Seebeck effect in collaboration with Eiji Saitoh’s experimental group. Also involving the van Wees group of Groningen University, we identified the magnon polaron by a non-local spin transport configuration. This study exposed a competition between magnon-polaron diffusion and bulk spin Seebeck effect in YIG Another highlight was an analysis by the spin conversion project-employed postdoc A. Leon of the potential use of rare earths in spintronics. The strong spin-orbit interaction in these systems causes a locking of the spin to an electric quadrupole when the 4f shell is partly occupied. The letter interacts with electric field gradients that can be very large at interfaces between magnetic insulators and metallic contacts. By this mechanism he predicts that magnetic insulators such as rare earth iron garnets can be switched by moderate electric fields, which could lead to power-saving memories and logics. We also contributed to the interpretation of experiments in terms of the discovery of the spin Nernst effect, i.e. generation of a transverse spin current by a temperature gradient, see https://www.magnetics.jp/tech-info/inf_index/inf_spin/155-01/ Other activities addressed the atomistic spin simulations of magnetic insulators, dynamics of antiferromagnets and skyrmions, and spintronics of topological materials.
