Research Abstract |
The first year investigations can be categorized as follows: 1) Experiment: We first investigated the experiment task required for the project. After examination we found our initial idea of the Karuta task to be difficult in the presence of equipment for anxiety induction and measurement. We thus designed a second task using a touch panel and the phantom haptic robot. The new task requires subjects to press as quickly as possible, a series of visual buttons presented on the touch screen using his finger or while holding the phantom robot. The subjects pre-learn parts of the sequence (and number of parts) and we measure how the preliminary learning affects the subsequent button presses in the presence of anxiety. We have started collecting data in this experiment now. 2) Anxiety induction: We investigated mechanisms to induce controlled anxiety in the subject. We first tried to induce anxiety by competition. However, we found that the inter subject variance of performance deterioration to be very high with this procedure. Therefore, we have we are now investigating anxiety induction in subjects with negative reward (electrical shock) for errors. For this we have started to collaborate with Dr. Ben Seymour of CINET, who is an expert in using the electrical pain device. 3)Anxiety Measurement: We investigated measurement of anxiety and found the use of skin conductivity and muscle co-contraction (in terms of EMG) to be the most suitable for our experiment. In addition the trial by trial anxiety modulation will be assisted by our reward- anxiety estimator model.

Due to change of instituton and because an appropriate research assistant was not found, the experiments are a bit delayed than planned.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
- I plan to take more time to do the experiments myself and not wait for a appropriate research assistant - I have decided to collaborate with a pain expert for the process of anxiety control -By the end of the year, I plan to collect the major part of the data required for modelling and the following imaging experiments
