Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Our project aims to understand anxiety at different levels and examine how and why it affects motor performance. In the last year we continued our planned experiments and modelling and in addiiton performed two new experiments with sports professionals for investigating cognitive anxiety on sports performance. Button press learning experiment: In this experiment developed a year before, we collected data from 10 subjects and developed an analysis procedure. The experiment was fine tuned for parameters after which we collected data from 10 more subjects. The experiment setup and analysis is fixed. However we require more subjects to get the required confidence. We will be continuing with the data collection and the corresponding MR experiments. New Experiments with darts experts: In addition we started a new experiment with expert Darts players to understand how and why observing a fellow players performance affects one’s own motor behavior. We could get some very interesting results in this experiments which were published and picked up by many leading newspapers including Asahi Shinbun, Yahoo Japan and Scientific American Magazine. We are now working on the computational model for the observed behaviors. New experiment with Baseball pitchers: With the success of the darts experiments, we started a second new experiment with baseball professionals to see how unrelated visual images can lead to cognitive anxiety and how this affects the throw performance. We have collected data from 7 preliminary subjects and will continue to get more subjects this year.

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The main experiment progress is on course but the MR experiments are bit delayed as the behavioral paradigm was found to require more subjects to confirm. On the other hand two new experiments have been conducted in the project.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
The behavioral experiments on the button press task will be completed within the next months. The data for the baseball pitcher task will be finished by the end of the year. By the end of the year (December) we expect to finish all behavioral experiments. MR experiments will continue till February as we also publish the behavioral work.

I could get a cheaper price for EMG system than expected
