東北地方太平洋沖地震に伴った津波が巨大化した最大の要因は、日本海溝付近のプレート境界断層が50ｍにも及ぶ、前例のないくらい大きくすべったことである。地震時の断層すべり量は、断層物質のすべりに対する摩擦抵抗の大きさのほか、断層近傍の応力状態ならびに地震時の応力変化によって大きく左右される。また、断層およびその周辺母岩の浸透特性、熱物性、岩石の構造（特に空隙構造）特性も間接的に断層のすべり挙動に影響を及ぼす。
本研究においては、平成２８年度に各種地震断層関連の掘削コア試料などを用いて、地震断層のすべり挙動を大きく左右する応力状態の決定（非弾性ひずみ回復法による掘削コア試料の応力測定）、古地磁気測定によるコア試料の定方位付け、岩石試料の構造特性の測定（空隙寸法の分布）、関連する各種物性の解明ならびにその計測手法の研究を行った。研究分担者の山本裕二氏（高知大学）や、連携研究者の谷川 亘氏（国立研究開発法人海洋研究開発機構）、木下正高氏（東京大学）、研究協力者のTimothy Byrne（米国コネティカット州立大学）、高橋 学氏（国立研究開発法人産業技術総合研究所）、研究代表者林 為人の指導する修士課程の大学院生である杉本達洋氏（京都大学）の協力のもと、以上の内容に関する研究の成果を得ることができた。平成２８年度中には、その諸研究の成果について、国際と国内の学術誌などで論文６編（査読あり４編と査読なし２編）のほか、学会の研究発表会や成果報告会などにおいて研究発表を７回行った。
