Research Abstract |
The goal of the STAR-CODE project is to create efficient communication concepts/technologies for multiterminal nodes based on the recent advances in network information theory and coding theory, where the multiterminal network expresses a structure of coding schemes. The keywords are: (a) single relay (b) data exchange between users In this first year, we worked on the exploitation of side information to best utilize the correlation properties so that full diversity can be achieved. We found that the benefit of side information is maximum when the doping rate is set optimally. This results are presented in IEICE General Conference in Niigata University, March 2014. In the end of first year, we hold a steering committee (STC) meeting on 24-25 March 2014, in school of information science, Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (JAIST), Ishikawa Campus. The steering committee members abroad came to Japan to evaluate our first year results. We made 4 presentations to build the successful STAR-CODE networks.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The first year contains two work packages (WPs), i.e., WP1: Side Information and WP2: Joint Source-Channel Coding. We have one publication, one submitted journal and one paper is under preparation for a conference. This year, the travel budget is not much used. We are expecting to publish this year results in the second year.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Based on the project proposal and input from the STC Meeting in April 2014, we are planning to work on the following: WP3: Internal Spatial Coupling WP4: External Spatial Coupling. We received suggestion from the committee that WP4 should not necessarily follow spatially coupled codes. We design best scheduling suitable for STAR-CODE networks as well as some theoretical limits for STAR-CODE networks.

Expenditure Plans for the Next FY Research Funding |
The most big budget is for personnel expenditure and remuneration. However, since we just found the project worker in February 2014, this budget should be carried over to the second year. Furthermore, the conference was in Japan, which caused not so much budget consumption. The carried over budget will be used: 1. Salary of project workers (three students). This year we are planning to hire one more students since this year we have heavy work package. 2. More publications and conference in the second year.
