Outline of Final Research Achievements

In order to understand the molecular mechanisms underlying the diversification of insect wings, the gene functional gene analyses, such as RNAi and transgenesis, were performed using non-model insects.
In this study, we successfully identified a novel gene which plays crucial roles on the formation of elytra. Interestingly, the RNAi phenotype of this gene showed elytra-specific inhibition of sclerotization. This result will provide an insight to the evolution of elytra in coleopteran insects.
