Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This project sought to explore the social context of comfort women in Indonesia during the Japanese occupation of 1942-45, focusing in particular on urban areas. By collecting substantial source materials and examining various fields of activities within Indonesia, including a range of medical related issues, this project has begun to provide a concrete basis for understanding wartime events and experiences. The importance of the personal and professional networks involving Japanese and Indonesians has also become apparent, and a new research project has been born out of this project. During the extended grant period (2013-2017), project members organized 2 international symposia, one international workshop, a regional symposium in Kyushu, and 3 international conference panels. Some research results have been published as separate papers, but a special volume of studies by project members and affiliated foreign researchers is being completed and will be published soon.
