Outline of Final Research Achievements |
We investigated the role of zinc and iron as modulators of ageing. Even at dietary zinc level where normal body weight gain occurs, endogenous antioxidant concentrations did not reach the normal level in rats. We found that the conventional levels of dietary requirements for zinc and iron are not adequate for rats. Our meta-analysis has shown that iron deficiency without anaemia leads to fatigue in humans. These results suggest the need for further investigations on senescence regulation by supplementation of zinc and iron.
