Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In this academic year, the third year of my present research, I worked on the last three chapters (9-11) of the Saurasamhita. I also located parallel passages in the Bhavisyapurana and compared them to the text I am editing.
On sabbatical leave, from October to December 2015, I was in Europe for research. I participated in the workshop for the preparation of the fourth volume of the Tantrikabhidhanakosa, a dictionary of Tantric terms, held at Academy of Sciences in Vienna. I also participated in a conference at Heidelberg University on historical documents from South Asia. Prof. Michaels of Heidelberg University whom I had met and had a fruitful discussion in his Kathmandu research station had invited me to the conference. In January 2016 I visited and lectured in University of California, Berkeley, and met my collaborator Prof. Timalsina at San Diego State University. In February and March, I stayed in Kyoto and worked quietly toward the finalization of the critical edition of the text.
With the three remaining chapters completed, I finally finished my critical edition of the entire text of the Saurasamhita. However, I need to check and verify readings at a few places against a transcript kept in Wellcome Library, part of Wellcome Collection, London. I plan to do so soon in the next academic year. This year I also worked on the English summary of the edited text and wrote down some other essential part of the introduction to the text such as description of the palm-leaf manuscript and its four transcripts.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
As I had my first sabbatical leave, from October 2015 to March 2016, I could fully concentrate on my research work. Collaboration with my international research partners was extremely helpful.
Like the result of my previous JSPS research project I am asked to contribute the result of this research project in the form of a book in the Early Tantra sub-series of“Collection Indologie”from the French Institute Pondicherry.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In the current academic year I plan to check and verify a few readings at some difficult places against the transcript of the text kept in Wellcome Library. I also visit Bodelian Library and consult related manuscript.
In the introduction part of the research work, I will analyze the language and structure of the text. As now the critical edition is ready, and part of the introduction written, I can start forming the whole thing into a complete book with the critical edition of the text, an introduction including a detailed summary of the edited text, a comparison of parallel passages from the Saurasamhita and the Bhavisyapurana in an appendix and indices. Like the result of my previous JSPS research project I plan to publish the book in the Early Tantra sub-series of “Collection Indologie” from the French Institute Pondicherry.

Causes of Carryover |
I did not visit the Wellcome Library London, as I had to finish the edition first. Therefore I could not make a planned visit.
|
Expenditure Plan for Carryover Budget |
Without consulting the transcript of the text kept at Wellcome Library, London, it is not possible to finalise the text which I want to do as soon as possible. Therefore I go to Wellcome Librarym London; at the same time I will visit Bodelian Libraries at Oxford.
