Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Much research already exists regarding Natsume Soseki’s interest in art and the relationship between his literary work and the arts, but studies that form the groundwork for this research can hardly be said to be sufficient. The principle researcher focuses in on the parts that have been cut out, presumably by Soseki himself, from the arts journal “The Studio” and other pieces in the Soseki Collection. By understanding the pictures and articles that he removed it is possible to gain verifiable insight into Soseki’s interests in art; and in particular, in Western art. This study revealed his preferences for many painters, artists and artistic trends including Romilly Fedden, the varied interests in arts that formed a background to Soseki’s literary works, and made clear the breadth of Soseki’s perspective on the arts.
