Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The collection of folk songs in France first started in Brittany in the 19th century. I examined this phenomenon from the historical context and the cultural situation of France and Europe as a whole by focusing on the interest of romantic writers in folk songs and the dispute over the origin of the tales of the Round Table which at the time had seen a revival with the wave of medievalism. I ascertain that the success of collecting folk songs in Brittany encouraged the French Government to launch an official investigation throughout France for a general compilation of popular poetry.
