Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study surveys the plays, operas, shows and other such works in the overall literary oeuvre of the nineteenth-century French writer Nerval to arrive at statements concerning the performing arts. In particular, it focuses on the criticism of theatre Nerval wrote for magazines and newspapers. The scripts of the performing arts and works referred and/or alluded to in Nerval’s own works and the research literature on them are also examined. This study demonstrates that by appreciating the works of performing arts and writing criticism on them, Nerval constructed a literary world incorporating aspects of such arts works into his own oeuvre.
