Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The main goal for the final year of this project was accomplished, which was to publish the results on student perceptions of corpus referencing in an international publication. Overall, students regarded corpus referencing very positively and viewed it as a unique tool that could supplement their dictionary searches when writing in English, although learners did have to cope with a number of challenges in order to employ the corpus system effectively. In addition to reporting on these research outcomes, efforts were made to prepare the data for further analysis on the participants’ written accuracy in the future; specifically, to assess the participants’ rate of success with corpus-based error correction. To this end, lexical errors in the participants’ essays were error coded and tagged via a text editor, totaling 1169 errors in 75 student essays and spanning 27 lexical error categories. Since no data analysis software program is commercially available that can link and compare corresponding sets of textual data (i.e. original and revised essays), a computer programmer was consulted to create custom designed software for processing this essay data quantitatively. Looking forward, the data collected in this study offer a rich resource of L2 intermediate writers’ error tendencies and the software developed with this funding will enable the researcher to investigate corpus-based error correction quantitatively in the next research project.
