Research Abstract

The purpose of the research is to produce corpora, word lists and pedagogic materials for students in a university medical faculty. We have undertaken background research in the form of interviews and correspondence with senior members of the medical faculty, which has led to a broadening of the corpus research.
In the last year, we have built a corpus on anatomy using "Gray's Anatomy for Students", created provisional anatomy word lists of single and multi-word terms, designed basic anatomy worksheets for students, and further developed some new materials organized around basic anatomy and diseases.
We have started to build a corpus based on "Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine". With the help of medical staff, we have divided the medical field into ten broad categories, which guide the development of an article-based corpus as well as materials development.
We have presented our initial findings at two conferences, and received useful feedback from both corpus experts and classroom practitioners. The initial findings have also been published.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

By modifying our corpus-building approach, we have been able to make rapid progress in building the anatomy component of a general medical word list. The structure and organization of pedagogic materials has also been established. Links have been made with key personnel in the medical faculty.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

The corpus based on "Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine" will be completed. A provisional general medical word list will be created and submitted to senior medical staff for review and feedback. A set of units of pedagogic material incorporating key medical terms form the word list will be created. These will be trialled and also used in an intensive course for third-year medical students. A corpus based on medical articles will also be built and compared with the textbook-based corpora. The results will be presented internationally, and published.

Expenditure Plans for the Next FY Research Funding

There is budget remaining from the previous year because Walter Davies did not use his allocated travel allowance last year. Instead, he is planning to attend conferences domestically and overseas Next Fiscal Year.
We are all planning to attend the BAAL Conference in the UK in September. Also, we will require budget for medical reference books and materials necessary for our corpus analyses.
