Outline of Annual Research Achievements

A second year of classroom data from head-held camcorders was successfully collected. From the data, insights into Interactional Competence (IC) in the L2 classroom was achieved, particularly in that area of "intersubjectivity," and "change-of-state." Following a Conversation Analysis (CA) approach, this shows the variable resources students employ to achieve understanding. These findings will help develop a research-informed pedagogy to apply in 2015. In 2014, two research assistants were hired to successfully transcribe and organize relatively large amounts of data from both 2013 and 2014. Two expert visits were made, effective for collaborating on an international exchange project for developing Interactional Competence between Japanese learners of English and Canadian learners of Japanese. Based on work in 2014, three academic conferences were attended (one domestic, two international), one domestic presentation and one international presentation given, and one domestic paper published. Several connections were made with eminent scholars in the field of IC and CA.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

In 2013, an expert visit in Canada (Lethbridge, AB) was cancelled, but 2 trips were made in 2014 to compensate. Also, attendance and presentation of GIA research at TESOL (Portland, US), which was accepted but cancelled, was presented at TESOL2015 (Toronto, CAN) on March 26. Research assistants began processing data in early 2014.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

Research assistants will continue to use current equipment and software to help process 2013~2015 classroom data. Existing head-held camcorders will be used to gather more classroom data, focusing on a research-informed pedagogy. Because of the unexpected size and processing power necessary to deal with video files, a desktop computer designed to deal with large video files will be purchased. Three conferences (one domestic and two international) will be attended, 6 (six) GIA-related research presentations given, and subsequent papers published.

Causes of Carryover

Unused funds from 2014 were due to personal reasons, which required the cancellation of an international trip abroad and a later start than planned for research assistants.

Expenditure Plan for Carryover Budget

Because the 2 international conferences in 2015 are concurrent and both in Europe, only one ticket is necessary. Funds saved will be put toward salary for research assistants, maintenance of existing equipment, and the purchase of a more efficient computer for processing large video files.
