Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In 2014 the researchers were able to have the opportunity of speaking with various practitioners in Spain and Finland and discuss with them the way in which CLIL approaches to foreign language education are applied and viewed in those countries.
Both researchers made a presentation, entitled ‘Issues Related to the Adoption of CLIL in Japanese Universities’, at the ‘THINK CLIL 2014 9th International Conference’, held at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, 28-30 August 2014.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The opportunity to meet researchers, teachers, students and pupils, and administrators face-to-face in Europe was greatly appreciated. The insights gained from these experiences have helped to shape the view of the researchers in relation to the prospects for any uptake of CLIL approaches to English language education in Japan.
Attending the ‘THINK CLIL 2014 9th International Conference’, held at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice and exchanging views with researchers from all over Europe and beyond was also of great benefit to our understanding of the kinds of challenges that Japan faces, but also the possibilities that exist in attempting to develop improved teaching and learning outcomes.
An important point of note is that many researchers expressed the opinion that many of the courses taught in English at universities in Europe can be more accurately viewed as English as a medium of instruction (EMI) than CLIL.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
The researchers intend to continue reviewing the relevant literature on CLIL, and to publish findings in journals in Japan, as well as attend and present at conferences both in Japan and abroad if feasible.
They also intend to continue to meet and discuss the prospects for CLIL uptake in Japan with local researchers and educational practitioners.
It is hoped that a web site to disseminate information about CLIL can be developed and made public prior to the end of fiscal year 2015.
|
Causes of Carryover |
Fewer expenses than anticipated were encountered miscellaneous items such as postage and printing due to the ease of electronic communication. Travel expenses were the biggest area of fund usage between April 2014 and March 2015 due to the distances involved.
|
Expenditure Plan for Carryover Budget |
It is expected that the main expense this year will be incurred in developing a web site dedicated to disseminating information about CLIL approaches to English language education and relevant research, and in providing access to and information about CLIL teaching materials. Some funds will also be required to purchase example materials for CLIL teaching and learning. It is also anticipated that some funds will be used for travel and conference fees. If necessary, these financial requirements will be met with funding from alternative sources.
