Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This year (2015-2016), I was able to locate and read documents related to the military and civilian portions of my Yellow Peril research project. In April 2015, I went through the Civilian Defense records for the West Coast to understand what the “peril” business leaders learned from the military. In the fall, I went to the Naval Heritage Center to read the diaries of Admiral Thomas Hart, the leader of the Asiatic Pacific Fleet, to examine if the Yellow Peril had "infected" his thinking. And in March 2016, I read through the Patrick McCarran Papers to learn how by 1952 he absorbed the new military thinking about the “peril” that dropped the “yellow” component. All this research will lead to some very new findings about the Yellow Peril that I will soon present at academic conferences, some of which I have already done so. This portion of the research will allow me to show how the military leaders influenced political leaders in terms of what they saw as the "peril" and how "yellow" was related to it.
