Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study examines the news discourse of British and Japanese public and commercial broadcasting corporations that reports on social issues. The study uses critical discourse analysis as an approach to decipher ideologies produced by the discourse. Based on a multi-modal approach, it explores various linguistic and non-linguistic elements to reveal what kind of interpretive frameworks for understanding social issues are produced and how they are created by the news discourse. The study identified three perspectives to analyze news discourse: 1) aspects of events given most importance, 2) causal relationships formed in the events, and 3) attributes attached to participants of the events.
