Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This research project attempted to answer the ubiquitous question, how best can we help learners learn foreign language pronunciation in the classroom?, by considering the following factors: (a) helping learners notice features in the input which might otherwise go unnoticed, and (b) letting learners work toward eliminating their own errors by noticing gap(s) between the target form and the their interlanguage in the course of communicative activities This study deliberately explored the significant possibility that learners would be able to work together toward eliminating their pronunciation errors in a positive classroom setting.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The proposed research designed to examine learners’ L2 pronunciation development with a special focus on learners' variables might at present reveal the followings: (a) the quantitative data assessed by external professional phoneticians in the pronunciation examination might indicate the progress in segmental (i.e. vowels and consonants) and suprasegmental pronunciation (i.e. word and sentence stress, connected speech, rhythm, intonation and so on) after having received communicative pronunciation instruction; and (b) the questionnaires data obtained to scrutinize the learners’ cognitive and affective conditions in the FFI activities will demonstrate some correlation between the development of L2 pronunciation and ILD. This will help us develop pedagogical intervention for FFI, so that more learners could actively get involved in the output-promoting task and thus achieve higher attainment in L2 pronunciation.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
This study further examines the long-term effects of FFI in L2 pronunciation and to explore possible optimal conditions for FFI, which might help learners be active and creative in the classroom. It scrutinizes learners variables among participants and engages in the output-promoting communicative instruction, which has recently started in L2 pronunciation research. Following my PhD thesis, this study hopes to demonstrate marked progress in the learners’ pronunciation over the prolonged period of instruction. The findings will be of significance for not only the national and international L2 pronunciation researchers but also practitioners who teach adolescent learners in secondary school level, where English is taught as a foreign language.
