Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Genetic introgression between Semisulcospira snails in Lake Biwa was investigated using a new nuclear genetic marker (PkInt-2). Three species endemic to Lake Biwa and one non-endemic (S. libertina) formed different clades, but the other non-endemic (S. reiniana) showed a great intraspecific variation in its sequences. The Pk-Int2 showed greater heterozygosity than another common genetic marker (ITS-1) both in S. habei and S. decipiens. These results suggest that genetic introgression between Semisulcospira species is greater than expected, and more samples and loci are needed to identify genetic markers characteristic of each species.
